If you’re still using Internet Explorer (IE), consider yourself out-dated.
The number one reason for this; IE is not open source and Firefox is. What this means is that anyone can contribute to making Firefox better. Number two reason is that IE is not standards compliant and Firefox is. This might not mean much to the average end user, but this has a caused a world of hurt for us Web Designers, Developers and Programmers.
Why? Because CSS and (X)HTML are the standard and IE can’t properly process even some of the most simple tasks because it wasn’t built with standards in mind. Specifically, someone who works on the web needs to make things cross-browser compatible, meaning to work properly in IE and Firefox because people are STILL using IE! A designer could work hard on a project, design perfect clean standards compliant code that looks beautiful in Firefox, but then when checked in IE there could be any number of problems like images or boxes not lining up properly and so on. So what are we to do? We’ve done everything right? We have to create hacks and workarounds.
There are many more reasons to be using Firefox, it’s safer, faster and downright just easier and has an infinitely larger array of plugins and add-ons.
With IE8, Microsoft has gone great lengths to bring their browser to the standard, but it’s just too little too late. So if you use IE6 or IE7 and you’ve been thinking of upgrading to IE8, go ahead.. you do still need IE for instanced where say your online banking account or other software only works in IE.
But, you have no good excuse…
