How to Make Your Computer Behave More Like The Web

How-to written for Windows XP.

An annoyance that I often hear about, is having to double-click in order to open files or folders. Annoying because users often experience that they need to try a few times in order to open something because they didn’t double-click fast enough or just right.

The easiest way to work around this is to set your computer to behave more like the web as in it only taking one click, a single-click to open files and folders thus saving you time and effort, here are the steps:

Difficulty: Easy

Step 1

Open a folder, opening the “My Documents” folder is often the easiest.

Step 2

On the folder menu, navigate to: Tools > Folder Options.

Step 3

You should be on the “General” tab, if you’re not click on it.

Step 4

In the 3rd section; “Click items as follows“, you’ll want to make sure that “Single-click to open an item (point to select)” and “Underline icon titles consistent with my browser” are the only 2 options selected.

Step 5

Now click “Apply” and close the options window and you’re finished.

Tips & Warnings

- Go to your desktop and test opening a file to get used to it / If you’d like to simply select an item and not open it, make sure that you’re actively on the desktop (the easiest way to do this is to click on an empty space somewhere on the desktop/background), and then hover your pointer over an icon, but don’t click and it should select the item, it will be highlighted.

- If at all you have any trouble or questions about this how-to or find any errors, please comment and I’ll work to update and resolve the article so it’s more thorough and understandable.

- At first, before you get used to the change you may accidentally click on files which with single-click opening on there is no return. Meaning if you click on a file that will open up a huge program, you’ll have to wait for it to load so that you can close the file.
